Chennai’s GOAT Ashwin equals Thala MS Dhoni on record-breaking IND vs BAN 1st Check Day 1

The king of Chepauk, Ravichandran Ashwin, didn’t disappoint the fans once again as he scored his sixth Test century in his den during the Ind vs Ban first Test. Ashwin is currently not out at the end of the day, having scored 102 runs off 112 balls. Not only did Ashwin score his sixth century, but he also equalled Indian team legend MS Dhoni’s record of six centuries in Test cricket.

Along with Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja is batting on 86 runs. The duo has recorded the highest seventh-wicket stand for India against Bangladesh in this format. Let’s take a look at all the records this pair has shattered at India vs Bangladesh first Test.

More overseas centuries than Dhoni

Ravichandran Ashwin has equalled MS Dhoni’s record of six Test centuries. Of Ashwin’s six centuries, four have been scored in India and two in the West Indies. In contrast, all six of Dhoni’s centuries were scored in Asia, with five in India and one in Pakistan.

Best partnership for India for any wicket below fifth

This partnership is the best for India against Bangladesh for any wicket lower than the fifth. The overall record still belongs to Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay, who piled up 283 runs at Fatullah in 2015. Additionally, India has recorded three other double-hundred partnerships, including a 259-run stand by Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir, and two 222-run partnerships — one between Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, and another by Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane.

Second-highest partnership against Bangladesh at home

This partnership is also the second-highest for any wicket for India against Bangladesh at home. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane had put together a 222-run stand in Hyderabad during the 2016/17 series. It’s also the second-best seventh-wicket partnership against Bangladesh, surpassed only by the unbeaten 223-run stand between Prasanna Jayawardene and Chaminda Vaas at SSC in 2007.

Indian pairs with more than one-century partnership

Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin previously added 130 runs for the seventh wicket against Sri Lanka at Mohali in the 2021/22 season. They have now joined an elite group of Indian pairs who have recorded two century partnerships for the seventh wicket or lower, alongside pairs like Farokh Engineer and Bapu Nadkarni, Ravi Shastri and Syed Kirmani, Roger Binny and Madan Lal, and MS Dhoni and VVS Laxman.

Highest seventh-wicket partnership at Chepauk

Jadeja and Ashwin’s partnership also set a new record for the highest seventh-wicket stand at Chepauk, surpassing the 138-run stand by Karun Nair and Jadeja against England in 2016/17. Five higher seventh-wicket stands have occurred on Indian soil, with the record being 280 runs, set by Rohit Sharma and Ashwin against the West Indies in Kolkata during the 2013/14 series.

Ashwin is one century away from equalling Vettori’s record

Ashwin now shares the record for the most centuries scored from No.8 with Daniel Vettori, having two centuries from other batting positions as well. Among batters with six Test centuries, Ashwin holds the highest number of five-wicket hauls with 36, leaving Ian Botham a distant second with 27. Additionally, no one has more ten-wicket match hauls than Ashwin’s eight, with Imran Khan trailing with six.
